Career planningSetting clear expectations
In a new role? Be clear on what’s expected of you
In a new role? Be clear on what’s expected of you

In your first couple of weeks, you’ll be introduced to your responsibilities and key priorities. What’s less likely to be clear straight away is what success truly looks like – in your first 100 days, at six months, or even in your first year.
When you meet your leader, they’ll usually share a significant amount of information to help you get started. This isn’t about anything being intentionally left out. It’s simply hard to remember what it feels like to be new and what clarity actually matters most early on.
To build a clearer picture of success over time, take a proactive approach and follow these two steps:
1
Ask specific questions about what is expected of you within your first two weeks
Ask clarifying questions if you are unsure of what has been said or to confirm your understanding.
2
And what else?
After your conversation, follow up with an email. In your follow-up email, document the expectations discussed. Confirm that you're on the same page by asking if there's anything you might have missed.
Remember this golden rule: Don’t hesitate to ask plenty of questions.
